Italy is set to compete in its second consecutive FIVB Men`s Volleyball World Championship final. Their opponent will be Bulgaria, making only their second ever appearance in the battle for gold, after both European nations secured their spots by defeating Czechia and Poland in Saturday`s semi-finals.
Italy will vie for its sixth world title after securing a dominant 3-0 victory (25:21; 25:22; 25:23) against Poland in a highly anticipated semi-final match.
Despite trailing 11:7 in the first set, Italy mounted an impressive comeback, displaying exceptional volleyball. Key to their success were Yuri Romanò and Alessandro Michieletto, who scored 15 and 12 points respectively.
Although Poland recorded more blocks (10-9), Italy proved superior in crucial moments. Notably, in the second set, they overcame a 22:21 deficit with an unanswered 4-0 run, moving them closer to victory.
Poland initially led the third set by five points (14:9), but again succumbed to Italy`s relentless pressure. Captain Simone Giannelli delivered an outstanding performance, orchestrating his teammates` attacks. Italy ultimately clinched the set 25:23, securing their second consecutive final appearance as they chase their fifth world title.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria is vying for a world title for the first time in 55 years, a historic moment since their last final appearance in 1970, when they lost to East Germany on home soil.
Their semi-final against Czechia showcased another superb performance from the tournament`s dark horses. Bulgaria has remained undefeated throughout the competition, winning all six matches and dropping only five sets.
The match was closely contested, with minimal margins separating the teams. Bulgaria claimed the first set 25:20, but then conceded the second 23:25.
Nevertheless, powered by their top scorer Aleksandar Nikolov`s impressive 31 points, Bulgaria triumphed in the third (25:21) and fourth sets (25:22). This victory presents them with a golden opportunity to clinch their first-ever world title.
Aleksandar Nikolov shared his excitement with VBTV: “Incredible! I am lost for words… We are medalists of this World Championship and I can’t believe it! Tomorrow we are just going to try to color the medal in gold. But we have a medal, so we are happy. It definitely felt like a really good game. I owed it to the guys after the bad start against the US. They pulled me out in that game and we managed to win a great quarterfinal. I had to repay them by playing this game like I did, so I am happy that I could.”
The final showdown will take place in Pasay City on Sunday, at 12:30 CEST. Italy will be chasing their fifth title, while Bulgaria has already guaranteed their sixth medal in the competition, and their first since winning bronze in 2006.
The bronze medal match, featuring Czechia and Poland, is scheduled for 08:30 CEST.

L`Italie s`apprête à disputer sa deuxième finale consécutive au Championnat du Monde de Volley-ball Masculin de la FIVB. Elle affrontera la Bulgarie, qui n`atteint ce stade de la compétition que pour la deuxième fois de son histoire, après que les deux nations européennes aient éliminé la Tchéquie et la Pologne lors des demi-finales de samedi.
L`Italie visera son sixième titre mondial après une victoire nette de 3-0 (25:21 ; 25:22 ; 25:23) contre la Pologne lors d`une demi-finale très attendue.
Bien que menée 11:7 dans le premier set, l`Italie a orchestré un retour spectaculaire, démontrant un volley-ball fantastique. Yuri Romanò et Alessandro Michieletto ont été les piliers de cette performance, marquant respectivement 15 et 12 points.
Bien que la Pologne ait réalisé plus de contres (10-9), l`Italie a fait preuve d`une supériorité notable dans les moments décisifs. Par exemple, dans le deuxième set, ils ont surmonté un retard de 22:21 grâce à une série de 4 points consécutifs, les rapprochant ainsi de la finale.
La Pologne a mieux débuté le troisième set, menant de cinq points (14:9), mais a de nouveau cédé face à la pression italienne. Le capitaine Simone Giannelli a réalisé une prestation remarquable, distribuant le jeu avec brio. L`Italie a finalement remporté le set 25:23, assurant ainsi sa deuxième qualification consécutive pour la finale et visant un cinquième titre mondial.
De son côté, la Bulgarie se bat pour un titre mondial pour la première fois en 55 ans, un moment historique depuis sa dernière finale en 1970, où elle avait été battue par l`Allemagne de l`Est à domicile.
La demi-finale contre la Tchéquie a été l`occasion d`une autre performance exceptionnelle des outsiders du tournoi. La Bulgarie est restée invaincue jusqu`à présent, remportant ses six matchs et ne concédant que cinq sets.
Le match a été serré du début à la fin, avec de minimes détails faisant la différence. La Bulgarie a remporté le premier set 25:20, avant de s`incliner dans le deuxième 23:25.
Cependant, grâce à l`excellent Aleksandar Nikolov, meilleur marqueur avec 31 points, la Bulgarie s`est imposée dans les troisième (25:21) et quatrième sets (25:22). Cette victoire leur offre une opportunité fantastique de remporter leur tout premier titre mondial.
Aleksandar Nikolov a partagé son enthousiasme avec VBTV : « Incroyable ! Je n`ai pas de mots… Nous sommes médaillés de ce Championnat du Monde et je n`arrive pas à y croire ! Demain, nous allons juste essayer de transformer la médaille en or. Mais nous avons une médaille, alors nous sommes heureux. C`était vraiment un très bon match. Je le devais aux gars après le mauvais départ contre les États-Unis. Ils m`ont relancé dans ce match et nous avons réussi à gagner un excellent quart de finale. Je devais les remercier en jouant comme je l`ai fait dans ce match, alors je suis content d`avoir pu le faire. »
La finale se déroulera à Pasay City, dimanche, à 12h30 CEST. L`Italie visera son cinquième titre, tandis que la Bulgarie a déjà assuré sa sixième médaille dans la compétition, et sa première depuis le bronze en 2006.
Le match pour la médaille de bronze, opposant la Tchéquie et la Pologne, est prévu à 08h30 CEST.
