Germany is set to take on neighboring Switzerland in Basel for their inaugural friendly match in preparation for the upcoming World Cup this summer.
On Friday evening, Germany will kick off its preparations for the 2026 World Cup with a friendly encounter against Switzerland. Julian Nagelsmann’s squad has scheduled four preparatory matches ahead of the major tournament, concluding this international window with a game in Stuttgart against Ghana.
This upcoming fixture marks Germany’s first international friendly in almost two years. Their last preparatory match was ahead of the home European Championship, where Pascal Groß netted a late goal to secure a victory against Greece in Mönchengladbach.
Since then, Germany experienced a surprising 2-0 away defeat in Slovakia, marking their first loss in a World Cup qualifier on foreign soil. However, Nagelsmann’s team concluded the remainder of that qualifying campaign with an impeccable record. Across their last four matches, they’ve found the net 13 times, including six goals in the reverse fixture against Slovakia, while conceding just once.
In contrast, Switzerland completed their qualifying group undefeated, even though they couldn’t secure victories against Slovenia and Kosovo in their final two away matches. Murat Yakin, a former defender for Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern, is set to guide Switzerland in his third major tournament, following quarter-final exits at the 2022 World Cup and the Euros.

The last time these teams faced off at St. Jakob-Park in a 2012 friendly, Eren Derdiyok notably bagged a hat-trick within the opening 50 minutes. Switzerland claimed a memorable 5-3 victory in that match, with Tranquillo Barnetta, also a former Leverkusen player, assisting Derdiyok’s unique international hat-trick. Mats Hummels and Marco Reus scored their inaugural goals for Germany against Ottmar Hitzfeld’s squad during that game.
Since that 2012 encounter, the subsequent three meetings between the two nations have all concluded in draws, including a 1-1 stalemate during the group stage of Euro 2024. Switzerland currently boasts an unbeaten run, stretching back to their final Nations League game of 2024, where a late penalty from former Bayern Munich winger Bryan Zaragoza for Spain brought an end to their challenging campaign.
Squad Updates
Following their initial call-ups from Nagelsmann, Stuttgart’s in-form winger Jamie Leweling, alongside Bayern Munich’s Aleksandar Pavlović and Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, has had to withdraw from the squad due to injury.
Angelo Stiller and Chris Führich were called up to replace the first two injured players, with their club ground being the venue for a match on Monday. However, the 38-year-old coach opted not to name a replacement for Leweling. The absence of Max Beier had already puzzled Niko Kovac, and despite the latest injury in the German camp, the Borussia Dortmund attacker did not receive a call-up.
The only new additions to the squad are Bayern Munich’s Jonas Urbig and Lennart Karl. Jamal Musiala is absent as a precautionary measure. Notably, Kai Havertz makes his return to the team for the first time since late 2024.
Switzerland also made a late adjustment to their roster, with Noah Okafor stepping in for the injured Filip Ugrinić.
